Taking Risks

In Daily Devotional by Paul La Vigne

Theme of the Week: All Things New: New Beginnings

Bible Verse:  And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.” Judges 6:15-16, ESV

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 11:8 ESV, Hebrews 11:27

You’ll never fulfill your calling in your comfort zone. Sometimes new beginnings require risk. New beginnings can be scary as we venture into unknown territory and often outside of our comfort zone: a new school, moving to a new city, making new friends, or starting a new job.

I was very comfortable in the same job I had done for 20 years. There were times that I wondered if God was calling me to do more. But I never had the courage to take a new step until the day I was forced to move out of my comfort zone. I was jolted into a new reality and knew it was time for a new beginning. This is the time to press deeper into your walk with Jesus. Spend as much time as you can in the word and in prayer. Talk to your Pastor, share with your wife and with trusted brothers in Christ. Through it all, trust that God is way ahead of you and knows the next ten steps. It’s in times of uncertainty that our faith is tested.

At 75 years old, God called Abraham to a new beginning: leave his country, his family, and his father to go to a land that God would eventually show him. He left his comfort zone and took a huge risk, having no idea where he was going. “It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger. He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible.” (Hebrews 11:27 NLT).

When faced with new beginnings, the best thing we can do is keep our eyes focused “on the one who is invisible” and trust that the risk we’re taking is part of God’s plan and will be worth everything we go through to get there.
