Regular Reliance

Theme of the Week: Spiritual Reset & Renewal

Bible Verse: I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. Psalm 121:1-4

Scripture Reading: Psalm 121:1-8

We all need help, even if we don’t like to admit it. I can be stubborn and not ask for help, simply relying on my own ability to get things done. How does it work for you when it’s just you on your own?

My guess is, not always great! It doesn’t work for me either.

I’m not entirely sure of the occasion for David writing this Psalm, but I feel like if he wrote this encouragement last week, I would believe it! It’s so timeless. When is there ever a time we don’t need His help? Especially in the throes of a global pandemic. With crisis, confusion, and fear, we need focus more than ever! What we focus on will either build fear or faith, and we want to build faith so we can share it.

Recently, I was listening to a conversation with Rick Warren as the guest on the Carey Nieuwhof Podcast. Rick was talking about the great importance of focusing on God and his Word in this pandemic season. One of his suggestions to pastors and leaders is to make sure the first words you read and the last words you read every day are found in the Scriptures. He recommended that you read until something in the Bible challenges you or comforts you, and then focus on that one thing. He also added to keep your Bible open on the side of your bed, as an open Bible is much harder to ignore.

It’s clear to me that Rick Warren knows where his help comes from because of where his daily focus is. He has discovered something I hope we can all discover: Regular reliance on God recharges your soul.

Take a moment to take your focus away from all the tasks in front of you. Turn your focus to God. Give him the first word and last word of each day so that your focus builds faith.
