Christ’s Purchase of Salvation

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Theme of the Week: Everything We Need for a Godly Life

Bible Verse: But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:4-5

Back in the early 2000’s a very popular Christian rock band performed in the city where I was living. Tickets sold out early and I was fortunate to get one. On the night of the concert, I arrived to find loads of people standing in line for entry or rushing to their seats. The excitement was palpable and contagious. However, my experience was a little different than most of those fans.

I walked past the line to the back door of the venue. The door was opened for me, and I followed my host down a hallway to a room behind the stage. There, I met the band, hung out for a while, ate pizza, and had some great conversation.

How was that possible?

The person who opened the door for me was the band’s lead guitarist. He was a good friend of mine. He had the power to open the door and let in whoever he wanted. He had called me earlier with the invitation to come down. I had access because he had authority.

Christ has invited us into eternal life in a similar way. He has authority. He purchased our salvation on the cross and made it possible for us to enjoy the benefits. It is through His sacrifice that we have the hope of living a life that pleases God.

He has the authority. He has sent out the invitation. He can open the door. Our response is to accept the invitation and walk through the door. And then live with a thankful heart for the rest of our lives.
