Theme of the Week: Why Is Life So Hard?

There is a fourth source of suffering that is somewhat embarrassing to admit: we are not as intelligent as we thought; we can be fools. We put ourselves through so much discomfort simply because we make reckless, unintelligent decisions.
We eat too much, drink too much, or smoke too much and wonder why we have health issues.
We spend too much on things we want rather than on things we need, and we wonder why we suffer financial stress.
We chase after some unreachable goal at work and sacrifice our relationships, our sanity, and our souls, and wonder why we have stress disorders and depression.
This was my story. At some point in my life, I had made a vow that I would be the best employee no matter what job I had. I had promised myself that no employer would ever have reason to be disappointed in me. Well, that was just foolishness. That kind of standard drove me to exhaustion. It was pride-based and competition-focused, and it meant that I spent too much energy on something that was unattainable. My goal was not to be the best I could be but rather to be better than everyone else. This was highly stressful and not what I was meant to do. The result in my case was months and months of dark suffering with depression and stress disorder.
We will all suffer somewhat because of our own stupidity. That’s just the way it is. This is our first time through this life. We will romance wrongly, parent wrongly, and work poorly at times. But we can learn from our mistakes. We can make changes. And with those changes can come a reduction in suffering.
