Theme of the Week: Stress

Bible Verse: Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6

Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:3-6

As we wrap up this week’s devotions, it is important to return to definitions and key points for handling stress. Remember, zero stress is not the goal. Stress is the physical and emotional response to pressure; where uncertainty meets expectations. When we are equipped to handle stress, we are able to harness the body’s response towards what it is God calls us towards. We can step out of our comfort zone, and maintain a handle on things so that they do not spill over into panic.

There are things we can do in the heat of the moment to keep ourselves in the learning zone. We can take a moment(s) to hover and breathe. We can help ourselves see more than the constricted problem in front of us by broadening the context. There are great general practices that can lead us to better stress management. Taking time to withdraw and pray prayers like the Prayer of Examen. We’ve seen that sometimes the way we have always done things can create more problems than it solves, and a new structural change is in order.

I pray these techniques and perspectives, alongside the work of the Holy Spirit, breathe confidence as you face the stress that comes your way.

Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,
To him be the power and the Glory, Amen.

Prayer: God, thank you that there you are the God of redemption. Help me to rely on you in my times of stress and anxiety. Help me to cast all my cares on your loving and indwelling presence so that you can continue to transform me into the image and character of Jesus.

Reflect: How can you practice surrendering your moments of stress to healthier ways of engaging life. How can you rely on God to help you develop practices that enable you to deal with stress in productive ways?
