Think Sensibly

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Theme of the Week: Spiritual Gifts

Bible Verse: “For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one.” Romans 12:3

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:3-6

I’ve noticed something contradictory in myself. Sometimes I think too highly about myself, but within a short time, I can feel really discouraged about myself. It’s easy to think too highly and too negatively. It’s much harder to make an accurate assessment.

I’m not alone. Paul warns the Roman Christians not to think too highly of themselves or to be too self-deprecating. Instead, we should think sensibly about ourselves and the gifts God has given us.

Thinking sensibly means that we recognize that God has given us certain abilities, but we can’t take credit for them. They’re gifts from God that He gives simply because He’s generous.
Some people think they’re a big deal. Paul corrects this attitude. Don’t think too highly of yourself, he writes. Recognize that God has given gifts that you need. You’re only a part of the body.

Others think they have nothing to offer, or that God hasn’t given them any gifts. This is just as unhelpful as thinking too highly of yourself. God has given you the exact gifts He wants you to have. You’re not meant to compare yourself to others. You’re meant to use your gifts to serve others and glorify Him. Don’t miss out on the contribution He’s calling you to make.

Don’t think too highly or lowly of yourself. Whatever gifts God has given you, use them to serve others, thanking God for those gifts as well as the gifts that God has given others. He gave every Christian a gift, and we’re meant to think sensibly about whatever God has given us.

Prayer: Lord, help me not to think too highly or lowly of myself and the gifts you’ve given me. Help me to use whatever gifts you’ve given me to help others and to glorify you. Amen.

Reflection: Do you tend to think too highly or too lowly of yourself?
