Bible Passage: “For the training of the body has limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.” (1 Timothy 4:8 CSB)
Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 4:6-10
As we wrap up our week on building godly character, I want to leave you with three encouragements.
First, you’ll likely be the last to notice your own growth. Here’s the paradox of spiritual maturity: the closer we draw to Christ, the more clearly we see how far we still have to go. The holiest men are often the humblest because they’re most aware of the gap between who they are and who God is calling them to be. So if you feel you have a long way to grow, take heart—that awareness itself is evidence of progress. That’s how God designed it.
Second, character growth rarely follows a straight line. You’ll experience seasons of rapid development and stretches where nothing seems to be happening. Don’t be discouraged by the plateaus. God is working in both the visible growth spurts and the hidden, underground seasons. More is happening beneath the surface than you can see right now, and it’s all part of His good design.
Finally, remember this is a lifelong journey, and it will succeed. This work won’t be complete until glory. As long as you’re alive, there will be more room to grow, more refining to be done. But here’s the promise: God will finish what He started. He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion (Philippians 1:6). Your godly character is not just a hope—it’s a certainty secured by His faithfulness. So keep pressing forward.
Paul reminds us to train ourselves in godliness because it benefits us in every way, now and eternally. Training requires us to show up, to push through resistance, to choose discipline over comfort. And yet, the investment pays dividends we can’t fully measure.
Men, stay in the fight. Keep moving forward. The hard work of building godly character yields a payoff that nothing else can match.
Prayer: Lord, help me to keep building godly character. Amen.
Reflection: What is one specific area of your character where you sense God calling you to keep pressing forward this week?
