More than a Feeling

In Daily Devotional by J.R. Hudberg

Bible Passage: “All night long on my bed I looked for the one my heart loves; I looked for him but did not find him. I will get up now and go about the city, through its streets and squares; I will search for the one my heart loves. So I looked for him but did not find him.” (Song of Songs 3:1-2 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Song of Songs 3:1-11

“Happily ever after.”

It’s a great closing line and a wonderful idea.

But when we take a moment to reflect on that dream, the one we all deeply envy and covet, we realize that it’s far from the end of the story.

It’s actually the beginning.

The ever after tells the tale of the rest of life, and it skips the part of the story that we get to experience for ourselves.

The ever after is weekend breakfasts, workplace stresses, broken-down cars, forgotten comments, frustrated family members, camping trips, flat tires, windfall investments, and promotions passed over.

The excitement and humdrum of every day that ends in “y.”

It’s in those days that we live nearly all of our lives. Those days that have us at our wits’ end in one moment and smiling as though the cares of the world hold no sway over us at all in the next.

Our ever after is filled with moments that push us away from our loved ones.

Every relationship faces distance, some long-term, some more momentary.

Miscommunication, silence, emotional drift—the question is not if, but how we respond when it does.

Song of Songs 3:1-2 speaks to us of pursuit, especially when the road is rough. Through its lens, we see clearly to reject the passivity of ease. We do not wallow in the frustration of misunderstanding and silence. We do not hold a grudge that scratches our pride or nurse the bruised ego of feeling forgotten or less important.

Commitment to the one we have said (or will say) “I do” to pulls us, unerringly, to engaging, pursuing connection even when it is uncomfortable.

Perhaps especially then.

True committed love does not retreat—it chases, at its own expense and resources, the things that are most important. It always forgoes comfort, pride, dignity, and self-satisfaction to connect with the beloved.

Prayer: Gracious God, thank You for the woman You have blessed me with to share life. Help me step into moments of disconnection and find the threads that bind us back together. Amen.

Reflection: Do you withdraw when things get difficult? What relationship, or area of your relationship, needs pursuit right now?
