God Restores—One Way or Another

In Daily Devotional by Chris Walker

Bible Passage: “The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part…” (Job 42:12)

Scripture Reading: James 5:11; 1 Peter 5:10; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Ask a man his favorite country singer of all time, and there’s a decent chance he’ll answer, “Johnny Cash.”

Even guys who aren’t country fans seem to respect “The Man in Black.” Some of that, no doubt, was his famous sound and laid-back vibe.

But some of it also has to be his redemption story.

In the 1960’s, Cash achieved fame and wealth through his music, but it all fell apart due to his addiction and legal issues after multiple arrests and charges. He lost his family, nearly lost his career, and was completely falling apart when he found Jesus.

With Christ and his new love, June Carter, Cash rebuilt his life and his career, dedicating the rest of his life to praising God and serving others with his family.

What guy doesn’t love a story like that?

Unlike Job, Cash’s sufferings were self-inflicted. But the innocent Job’s story nonetheless ends in a very similar way:

God makes things right.

Both men enjoyed wonderful blessings in the next phase of their lives. No doubt these blessings don’t “make up” for what was lost, but there was joy and love and increase returned to both of them.

God is not unjust. Unjust suffering will not continue forever. And while we may not see every blessing we are hoping for on this side of eternity, we know that, one way or another, God will make right everything that was wrong, either here or in eternity, for “our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all” (2 Corinthians 4:16-18).

Chin up, good men. The season of suffering will end. The pain will stop. And the God of goodness will make everything right that was wrong, and will restore all that was lost.

Justice will be done, and our tears will be wiped away.

This is the sure promise of God, whose very name is “Redeemer” (Job 19:25).

Prayer: Lord, please make right all that was wrong. Grant me the strength to wait for that day in hope and anticipation. Heal everything that needs healing, and restore all that needs restoring in my life. Amen.

Reflection: What is one example from your life where God fixed something that was broken and causing suffering? What did it teach you about Him?
