They’re Looking for Someone to Follow

In Daily Devotional by Steven Sukkau

Bible Passage: “Start children off on the way they should go…” (Proverbs 22:6 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 6:4

A big misconception about young people is that they don’t want guidance.

But in reality, most are desperate for it.

Beneath the overconfidence, sarcasm, scrolling, and desperate need for independence, many young people are quietly asking:

“What kind of person should I become?”

“What actually matters in life?”

“How do I handle failure?”

“Who can I trust?”

“What does real strength look like?”

The world of X, YouTube, TikTok, and Meta is overflowing with answers to these questions and content creators hungry for disciples.

The real question is, are strong, godly men willing to step into that gap?

In Remember the Titans, Coach Herman Boone inherits a divided football team filled with distrust. But through consistent leadership, unwavering discipline, and accountability, the culture of the team begins to change.

He doesn’t just coach individuals. He shapes the environment around them.

Strong leaders influence culture and set standards that help people become everything they can be.

Proverbs says to “start children off on the way they should go” (Proverbs 22:6). Ephesians instructs fathers to raise children “in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).

While those verses directly address parenting, the principle reaches far beyond fathers alone.

Every mentor, coach, teacher, youth leader, employer, uncle, older sibling, and mature believer helps shape the spiritual direction of people around them.

Young people are hungry for leaders who combine truth with love. They long for someone to tell them:

“This path leads somewhere good.”

“I’ve made mistakes too; let me help you avoid some unnecessary pain.”

“Keep going!”

“You were made for more than this.”

That kind of guidance can change the trajectory of a life.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the people who have guided and led me throughout my life. Help me become someone who points others toward wisdom, truth, and ultimately toward You. Give me patience, courage, and compassion as I help guide the next generation. Let my leadership reflect Your heart and create environments where others can grow in faith and character. Amen.

Reflection: Who are the people around you right now who may be quietly looking for direction, encouragement, or leadership from you?
