Have you ever noticed that some of the happiest people you know aren’t necessarily the wealthiest?
They don’t drive the newest electric vehicle, live in the biggest house with the third garage, or take the most frequent vacations.
Yet they seem content.
They sleep well at night. They enjoy their families. They aren’t constantly chasing the next cryptocurrency.
Proverbs tells us why:
“Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil” (Proverbs 15:16 NIV).
Many men spend years pursuing more, convinced that the next raise, larger shop, or better investment will finally bring peace.
But peace isn’t something you can purchase.
Peace comes from knowing that God is in control and that you are walking faithfully with Him.
Psalm 37:16 says, “Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked.” That’s because money can solve some problems, but it creates others. “Mo’ money, mo’ problems,” as the rapper The Notorious B.I.G. wisely said (despite the questionable spelling).
More possessions often mean more maintenance, more pressure, more debt, and more worry. A larger bank account doesn’t automatically produce a calmer heart despite the temptation to believe it will.
Think of professional athletes who sign massive contracts, or the lottery winner of a massive payout, only to find themselves miserable, stressed, or bankrupt a few years later.
The money wasn’t the problem. The problem was expecting money to provide something it was never designed to give.
True peace comes from trusting God, not from achieving a certain level of net worth.
This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work hard or build wealth. It means our pursuit of wealth should never strain our relationship with God, our families, our integrity, or our peace of mind.
At the end of the day, a modest life filled with God’s presence is worth far more to a man than a fortune filled with anxiety.
Prayer: Father, thank You for reminding me that true peace comes from You, not from my possessions or financial success. Help me resist the temptation to believe that more money will solve every problem. Teach me to be content with what You have provided and to trust You with what I do not have. Guard my heart from worry and help me pursue Your presence above all else. Amen.
