Bible Passage: “A good person leaves an inheritance to their children’s children…” (Proverbs 13:22 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 8:17-18
When most men hear the word inheritance, they think about money, land, investments, or possessions.
Providing for future generations is a worthy goal, and Proverbs commends it.
But if all we leave behind is money, have we missed the bigger picture?
Every man is leaving an inheritance whether he realizes it or not.
The question is, what kind of inheritance?
Your children may inherit your stock portfolio, but they’ll also inherit your example.
They remember how you treated their mother, how you handled adversity, whether you kept your word, and what mattered most to you.
Long after your assets are divided, character continues to shape generations.
In Deuteronomy 8, Moses warns God’s people not to assume their success came solely from their own strength and ability.
It’s a sore temptation many men face. After years of hard work, it’s easy to believe we’ve built everything ourselves.
But Moses reminds us that God is the one who gives us the ability to produce wealth in the first place.
It reminds me of a modern parable about a brilliant group of scientists who finally managed to clone a human being from scratch.
Feeling confident, they looked up to Heaven and said, “God, we’ve finally done it. We can create life and cure diseases. Frankly, we don’t need You anymore.”
God, listening patiently, smiled and said, “That is impressive. But to make things fair, let’s have a contest. Let’s see who can create a better human being. But we must do it the old-fashioned way, exactly how I created Adam—from the dirt.”
The lead scientist grinned. “You’re on,” he said.
He immediately knelt down, reached out, and scooped up a big handful of dirt to start molding his creation.
But God stopped him. “Whoa, hold on a second,” He said. “Get your own dirt.”
That’s an important lesson to pass down.
Think of a family farm. Equipment wears out. Buildings eventually need replacing. Markets rise and fall. But values like integrity, diligence, generosity, and faithfulness can serve a family for generations.
The greatest legacy isn’t simply what you leave to your children. It’s what you leave in them.
One day, the people who know you best won’t primarily talk about your income, your acreage, or your accomplishments.
They’ll remember the kind of man you were.
A wise man plans for financial inheritance. A godly man also invests in a spiritual inheritance that will long outlive him.
Prayer: Father, thank You for every opportunity You have given me to influence the next generation. Help me remember that everything I have comes from You. Teach me to build a legacy of faith, integrity, humility, and generosity alongside any financial inheritance I may leave behind. May my life point my children, grandchildren, and those around me toward You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
