Bible Passage: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23 NIV)

Some verses cannot be read without a melody accompanying them. Today’s verses may be some of them for men who remember a certain tune from church. So much of Scripture is worthy of being made into song (and much of it has) as ways to remember and celebrate its truth.
But sometimes, when we do that, we conveniently ignore the context in which these verses are set.
We celebrate the enduring compassion. We love to be reminded by the rising of every new sun that God is faithful and His compassion, like the sun’s rise, is dependable and lasting—even though the reminder of compassion was penned because disaster was all around.
Jeremiah’s celebration of compassion and faithfulness is but a small glimpse of hope within an extended grief-stricken cry over the consequences of Jerusalem’s sin. The brilliant, but momentary, flash of light, just as a mirror hits the right angle to the sun.
And yet, this flash is both necessary and effective.
We need to hear this reminder and pay attention to the context.
These words are not flowingly penned as Jeremiah stands in a restored city, with health and vitality running through her streets. These are shaky and hastily scribbled words in the midst of the rubble.
But they are still true!
Why is this important?
These words look forward. They follow some of the deepest personal anguish found in Lamentations (3:1-20). Mercy does not wait for resolution. It is most powerful and most needed within the devastation. Even before the dust has settled over everything, coating the ruins in a layer of filth that suggests they cannot be rebuilt, mercy whispers its comfort.
God is faithful. He is compassionate. This is not the end.
For men who are perhaps standing in the rubble of their own failures, these whispers echo long—men whose lives have been torn down by their own choices, whose greed, lust, self-sufficiency, pride, or misguided version of masculinity have ruined lives, relationships, business, or alienated children—compassion’s melody is carried on the breeze.
Failure, even judgment, sees another sunrise. And with that sunrise, the light and heat of God’s love shine on us.
Prayer: Compassionate God, thank You that, even though the night is dark, a new sunrise reveals Your love and faithfulness. I need to know Your faithfulness. Thank You that my failures are not greater than Your mercy. Amen.
