Taking the First Step

In Daily Devotional by Andrew Yates

Bible Passage: “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.” (Matthew 18:15 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:17-21; Colossians 3:12-15

Broken relationships don’t usually heal on their own.

Left alone, hurt becomes resentment. Resentment becomes bitterness. Before long, silence replaces conversation, and people who once cared for each other begin living like strangers.

Jesus knew this.

That’s why His instruction in Matthew 18 is surprisingly simple:

“Go.”

Go have the conversation. Seek restoration. Take the first step.

Notice what Jesus doesn’t say. He doesn’t tell us to gossip about the person, build a case against them, or wait for them to apologize first. He calls us to move toward reconciliation with humility and love.

Isn’t that exactly what He did for us?

God didn’t wait for us to clean up our lives before coming after us. While we were still sinners, Christ came to us (Romans 5:8). He pursued us, not because we deserved it, but because He loved us.

That’s the heart of a peacemaker.

Taking the first step isn’t easy for a man. It requires humility. It means laying down our pride, listening before speaking, and being willing to forgive as we’ve been forgiven. It also means recognizing that reconciliation isn’t always within our control. We can pursue peace faithfully, but we can’t force another person to receive it.

Our responsibility is obedience.

As men, we often pride ourselves on being independent. But biblical strength isn’t found in avoiding difficult conversations. It’s found in having the courage to walk toward them with the heart of Christ.

Maybe there’s someone you’ve been avoiding, a phone call you’ve been putting off, a conversation you’ve rehearsed but never had.

Ask the Lord for wisdom, humility, and courage. Then, as far as it depends on you, take the first step.

That’s what peacemakers do.

Prayer: Father, thank You for pursuing me when I was far from You. Thank You that Jesus took the first step to make peace with me. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed pride, fear, or bitterness to keep me from pursuing peace with others. Give me wisdom to know when to speak, humility to listen well, and courage to take the first step toward reconciliation. May my life reflect the same grace You’ve shown me. Amen.

Reflection: Is there someone you’ve been avoiding because of unresolved hurt or conflict? What would taking the first step toward peace look like this week?
