Bible Passage: “The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” (Genesis 2:15 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:26-28; Genesis 2:8-15
Men need to feel productive. We need wins.
There is something incredibly fulfilling about putting your hands to something and working at it, and eventually being able to step back and say, “I did that.”
That desire isn’t necessarily pride or an unhealthy obsession with accomplishment, quite the contrary. It’s the fulfillment of the drive we were formed with.
God created Adam and almost immediately gave him something to cultivate. Before sin even entered the world and before work became this grueling, frustrating, and exhausting thing, God placed Adam in the Garden “to work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15).
Brothers, we were made to be productive.
The problem is that many men lose or abandon healthy outlets for this as life gets busier (read: messier). Work becomes something you have to do to pay the bills, and responsibilities seem to pile up. Most of your energy ends up going toward maintaining what already exists and just staying afloat, and sometimes it feels like you’re working constantly without actually accomplishing anything.
That’s why it can be incredibly good for you to find something you can create, build, improve, or cultivate. Maybe that’s woodworking, or maybe it’s fixing something around the house. Maybe it’s gardening, cooking, painting, writing, working on your car, or learning a new instrument.
You need to find an outlet where you can tap into that God-given drive to be productive. Never underestimate the importance of small wins… when other areas of your life feel overwhelming or outside your control, accomplishing something tangible can remind you that, in fact, you’re not completely stuck. You can still learn something and still improve. You can still build something and make progress.
Of course, your worth doesn’t come from what you accomplish, and your identity and value are ultimately found in Christ. But that doesn’t mean that these small personal accomplishments are meaningless.
So find something productive that you actually enjoy doing and give yourself permission to do it. Do it regularly because sometimes caring for yourself means getting a win.
Prayer: Father, thank You for creating me with the ability to work, build, and learn. Please help me to find healthy and enjoyable ways to use the abilities You have given me in fulfilling ways. Keep me from measuring my worth by what I accomplish, but help me to be productive in good ways. Amen.
Reflection: What is something you could create, build, improve, or cultivate that would give you a healthy sense of accomplishment right now?
