Theme of the Week: Why We Can’t Get Our Act Together?
Bible Verse: “For what the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering, in order that the law’s requirement would be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8:3-4, CSB
Scripture Reading: Romans 8:1-11
If you ever get tired of our broken world and disappointed in yourself, then Romans 8 is written for you.
It begins with the stark reminder that the law couldn’t help us. No matter how hard we try, we don’t have it within us to follow God’s law because of our fallen nature.
But then God acted. He didn’t give us a new method for self-improvement. Instead, he “condemned sin in the flesh.” “God condemned our sins at his cross. So the law cannot dictate the terms any more. Its punishments have been inflicted. Its fury is spent. The law is silenced in its condemning authority1”.
And now the Holy Spirit lives within us, causing us to live in a completely different way.
Everything about us is new. You won’t be sinless until Jesus comes again, but if you have trusted in Jesus, he’s removed all condemnation from your life and given you the Holy Spirit to change you from within. He won’t let go of you until his work is done in you. You have a new life, new passions, and new power. It’s the best news ever!
