Anticipating Renewal

In Daily Devotional by Dennis Moles

Theme of the Week: Advent

Bible Verse: But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Luke 2:10 (emphasis added)

Scripture Reading: Luke 2:1-21

Advent is a time of anticipation and arrival. It the time of year that those of us who follow Christ take time to remember the reality of His first arrival as the baby in Bethlehem’s manger. Historically the weeks of Advent take us on a journey through the hope, joy, peace, and love of Christ.

At the time of Jesus’ arrival, Israel had been waiting for God to fulfill His promise of sending a redeemer who would save them. When the message of arrival came to Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary, Joseph, the Shepherds, Simeon, and Anna, they could hardly believe it. The long-anticipated Messiah had finally arrived, and everything was about to change—but not in the way they thought.

Jesus came to…

  • give Hope to those who despair.
  • bring Joy to those who mourn.
  • extend Peace to the anxious and afraid.
  • to show Love to the world.

This week we will open windows on the Bible’s story of the coming of Jesus, Advent, that will help us rediscover that though this tiny baby might not have been the King they were expecting, He was and is the King we all need.

Prayer: Father, I confess that I may have lost some of the joy that your coming, both in history and in my life, is supposed to bring. Please help me remember the wonderful gift that you are to the world and to me.

Reflection: What did you first experience when you came to Christ? What has changed? Why?
