Bible Passage: “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.” (Ephesians 4:25 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Proverbs 12:22; Luke 6:45
My infant daughter was not a good sleeper.
We tried all the various techniques, and nothing worked.
One night, when we were in the “let her cry it out” phase, she was sobbing in her room while we, well, let her (this didn’t work either, by the way).
Eventually, she must have realized we weren’t coming to comfort her.
So she screamed.
She screamed with a horror that still gives me a shudder when I think of it. She screamed in such a manner that there was no way she wasn’t literally being murdered.
I bolted upstairs and into her room, ready to destroy whatever demon was harming my precious girl.
The minute she saw me, the screaming stopped. She smiled and began to coo.
I got played.
And as I looked down at my girl, safe and sound, I whispered:
“You little liar…”
That was the first time one of my kids lied to me. It wasn’t the last. But as we wrap up our week on being truth-seeking men, we’ll close by noting that we also need to be truth-speaking men.
A mentor of mine once told me that gossip and slander did far more damage to a church than a pastor’s affair, as awful as the affair is.
While that’s obviously hard to measure, having been a pastor for over 2 decades, I can certainly attest to the damage done when half-truths, “little white lies,” and full-on deception begin spreading as if they were facts.
As we have sought this week to grow in how we find truth in an increasingly “truthless” world, we have noted that we need to check our “itching ears,” search the Scripture, examine the fruit of the Spirit, find the way of Jesus, and listen to trustworthy, differing voices.
As we do this, our hearts will increasingly be filled with truth.
But this should affect how we speak, “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Luke 6:45).
In an online world where people share rumors as facts, the Christian man should be different. We remember that “The Lord detests lying lips,” (Proverbs 12:22).
To love truth is to speak it, and to avoid even the appearance of falsehood in what we say.
Part of the measure of a man is determined by his words. May ours seek always to speak the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
Prayer: Lord, fill my heart with truth, that it may overflow from my words as well. May what I speak always testify to Your truth going out into this world. Amen.
