Bible Passage: “If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” (Ecclesiastes 4:10 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Galatians 6:1-6
Between June 17, 1972, and August 9, 1974, US investigations exposed a massive network of political espionage, illegal wiretapping, and an aggressive White House cover-up orchestrated by the Nixon administration.
This became known as the Watergate Scandal.
One of the men involved was Chuck Colson. He was the Special Counsel to the President.
Once all the facts came to light, Colson was charged with obstruction of justice and sentenced to 1-3 years in a federal prison.
At the time, Al Quie, a Republican congressman, disliked Colson’s reputation as Nixon’s political “evil genius” and “hatchet man.”
Just prior to his incarceration, Colson gave his life to Jesus and was connected to a congressional prayer group that included Quie. By God’s grace, they became deep friends and spiritual brothers. This prayer group surrounded Colson and supported him in his restoration process.
Seven months into Colson’s prison term, crisis hit his family, and he was helpless behind bars.
Quie discovered an obscure, old legal concept that he believed might allow an innocent person to substitute for a guilty person under extraordinary circumstances.
He applied to serve out the rest of Colson’s prison term.
Though Quie wasn’t able to do it, Colson was profoundly impacted by the love and support shown to him.
I love this story because it shows the value of men gathering around other men to restore them.
It would be no surprise if every man reading this will need some men to come around him at some point in his life to help.
We may not be involved in something as massive as a political scandal, but we will make decisions that will need restoration.
It could be that your porn use had deeply hurt your marriage.
It may be that your obsession with work has deeply hurt your kids.
It may be that your pride has deeply hurt a colleague or a customer.
If you keep it secret, you will suffer the consequences alone. But if you will confess it to one or two brothers, and allow them to come close to you, you can be supported and restored in humble grace.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to let go of my pride and confess my failings to a trusted brother. I am not getting through this on my own; I need help. And when someone confesses something to me, keep me from thinking that I am better than him. Remind me of the plank in my eye so that I can help remove the speck from their eye (Matthew 7:3-5). Help me to love them as You love them. Amen.
Reflection: Who is Jesus asking you to come alongside and help restore? What might keep you from doing that? How can you help support and rebuild another man?
