Like many men, I don’t often think about budgeting until something goes wrong.
The car needs new tires just as work slows down.
The furnace quits in January.
The water tank decides to spring a leak.
Suddenly, I’m scrambling to figure out where the money will come from.
In Genesis 41, Joseph shows us the way.
God reveals that seven years of abundance for Egypt would be followed by seven years of severe famine—so that Joseph could make a plan.
During the good years, he stored excess grain, managed resources wisely, and as a result, he was well-prepared for the crisis before it arrived.
That’s a great picture of biblical stewardship.
Sometimes men fall into one of two ditches.
One group trusts entirely in their savings account and forgets God.
The other refuses to plan at all and calls it “faith.”
Joseph did neither.
He trusted God enough to heed the warning and was wise enough to prepare for the worst.
Proverbs 21:20 says, “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” In other words, wise men don’t consume everything they earn. They leave margin. They are savers.
Every NFL team hopes its starting quarterback stays healthy all season. But no competent coach builds a roster assuming nothing will ever go wrong. They develop a backup quarterback and build depth at key positions.
Nobody accuses that coach of lacking faith in his starter because he prepares a backup. In fact, we’d probably have some choice words for him if he didn’t.
Whether you farm, run a business, punch a clock, or manage a professional football team, there will be seasons of abundance and seasons of challenge. A budget is simply a plan for telling your money where to go so that you are always prepared.
And for a guy that isn’t great with numbers, I try to remember that budgeting is just one of the practical ways a man cares for his family.
Joseph had a budget long before he had a crisis, and we should too.
Prayer: Father, thank You for every resource You have entrusted to me. Give me the wisdom to manage it faithfully and the discipline to prepare for the unknown future. Help me to be a good steward for the sake of my family and Your Kingdom. Amen.
