But What About Sin?

Theme of the Week: Why We Can’t Get Our Act Together?

Bible Verse: “For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under the law but under grace.” Romans 6:14, CSB

Scripture Reading: Romans 6:1-14

I love hearing about what God has done to change us and to fix this broken world. But why do we continue to struggle?

Romans 6 gives us the answer. We’re still tempted by sin, but it no longer rules over it. We may sometimes struggle and fail, but sin has lost its power over us.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones compares this to a country in which one group of people have been bossed around by another for hundreds of years. One day, things change, and the oppressed group no longer has to listen to them anymore. The oppressors lost their power.

But although the status of the oppressed group had changed, and they were free, they hadn’t grasped it. They still live like the old group still has power over them even though they don’t.

That’s how we live. Sin has bossed us around for years. God has made us completely new through Jesus. But we’re so used to being bossed around by sin that we sometimes forget that it has no power over us. We’re free to say no because God has conquered sin and made us alive through Jesus.

If you’ve trusted in Jesus, live out your new identity. God is on your side. You’re a new person, empowered by the Spirit, and he will complete his work in you. Don’t let sin distract you from what God has accomplished in you!
