Character Shows Up When Life Gets Hard

In Daily Devotional by Steven Sukkau

Bible Passage: “The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them.” (Proverbs 20:7 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Psalm 112:1-2

It’s fairly easy to have good character when life is comfortable; when business is good, and your health is strong.

Or when your relationships are smooth sailing and nobody is criticizing you.

Unfortunately, your true character is usually only revealed under pressure.

In many ways, that’s why Steve Rogers (AKA Captain America) is one of my favorite superheroes.

His origin story is about a weakling, wannabe soldier who’s often beaten up, misunderstood, or pressured to compromise his convictions for the sake of convenience or popularity.

Yet, the reason he’s chosen for the Super Soldier program is that his values remain steady even when he’s guaranteed to lose. He keeps choosing courage, humility, loyalty, and sacrifice even when it costs him personally.

That’s the kind of consistency Scripture points toward.

Proverbs 20:7 says, “The righteous lead blameless lives; blessed are their children after them.” Notice the ripple effect. A life of integrity never impacts only one person. Faithfulness becomes evident to our families, friendships, workplaces, churches, and future generations.

Psalm 112:1-2 echoes that same principle: “Blessed are those who fear the Lord… Their children will be mighty in the land.”

The world often talks about success in terms of influence, wealth, and status, but Heaven measures differently.

God cares deeply about who we are when nobody is watching.

Because eventually, someone is always watching.

They notice whether we stay honest when dishonesty would benefit us. They can immediately tell whether our faith disappears when life becomes inconvenient, or whether we speak about people differently behind closed doors.

Integrity, then, is choosing the same values in private that you display in public. It’s not about performing for applause, but allowing God to shape your heart so deeply that obedience just becomes part of who you are.

It’s especially humbling to think that a young person may one day stay faithful in their own difficult season because they watched you remain steady in yours.

They may trust God through hardship because they once saw you do the same.

The next generation needs faithful examples, men who continue following Christ when life is difficult, unfair, and exhausting.

That kind of integrity leaves a legacy long after other achievements fade.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me become a person of integrity and consistency. Strengthen me to remain faithful when life becomes challenging or inconvenient. Shape my heart so that my character reflects You both publicly and privately. Let my life leave a legacy of faithfulness that encourages the next generation to trust and follow You. Amen.

Reflection: How does your character respond when life becomes difficult, and what example might that be setting for the people watching you?
