Christ’s Directions For Life

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Theme of the Week: Everything We Need for a Godly Life

Bible Verse: I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people. Ephesians 1:17-18

A while back, I purchased a garden shed from a local building supply store. It came in four big boxes of disassembled parts. I invited a good buddy of mine to come over and help me build it. After we laid out all the pieces, we picked up the step-by-step instruction guide. It was huge. We looked at the picture and, for the briefest of moments, wondered if we could put that baby together without following all the hundreds of steps presented. Fortunately, we didn’t consider that option for very long; we knew that we would be absolutely lost without the instruction manual.

How many times have we tried to live the Christian life without paying close attention to the Bible, which is the ultimate instruction manual? Paul prays that the eyes of our heart may be enlightened, but this prayer will not be fulfilled in a vacuum; we must pay attention to the directions that have been offered. God has not left us without a clear roadmap for how we are to live our lives, but just like my friend and I would be adrift without the directions for a simple garden shed, so we will be lost and confused without the directions in the Bible.

We need to be consumers of God’s Word. We need it in our hearts and our minds. We need to know it, memorize it, obey it, and love it. The Bible will show us how we are to live godly lives and how to avoid ungodliness.

When we immerse ourselves in God’s Word and marinate on the teachings of Jesus, we will know the hope to which we have been called.

Let’s be men of the Word, allowing Christ to coach and mentor and teach us.
