Theme of the Week: God. Men.
Bible Verse: Simon Peter answered, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6:68-69 CSB
Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:13-23
Throughout the week, we have looked at God being Lord and the main focus in your life. We have touched on a few practical examples, but truthfully there are hundreds of areas in our life, big and small, that every man should reflect on and ask, “Is he Lord?” It’s not easy. This is part of the journey of dying to self each day as we continue to become more Christ-like in every area of our lives.
As we wrap this week up, I want to focus on a story in the Bible where Jesus talks to the people who are following him. (John 6:59-71) Some scholars say many were following him for the miracles, for the show, or simply for the food. But when Jesus gave a hard teaching to his followers, it says many of them walked away. Jesus then challenged the 12 disciples and asked if they wanted to leave too.
Jesus isn’t just asking us to believe in him – he’s asking us to follow him and make him Lord of our life. This message isn’t as attractive, and many men have turned away from that part of Christianity because it is much harder. But as we understand God as the creator of everything, the authority above all, we need to learn how to trust that his way does lead to life.
Peter’s response when Jesus asked that question reflects a man who considered the cost – “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” Essentially he’s saying, who else or what else in this world is going to offer this life you are offering? He understood the truth.
