Don’t Discount Small Beginnings

In Daily Devotional by Paul La Vigne

Theme of the Week: All Things New: New Beginnings

Bible Verse:  “For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. These seven are the eyes of the Lord, which range through the whole earth.” Zechariah 4:10, ESV

Scripture Reading: John 6:1-15

Don’t despise the days of small beginnings.

When the young boy showed up with a bit of bread and fish to feed thousands of people, “Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, ‘Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?’” (John 6:8-9). Andrew looked down on the young boy, yet God didn’t despise the small size of the boy’s lunch. God didn’t just see five loaves and two fish; he saw 12 baskets of leftovers. Many new beginnings start with an idea, an introduction, a few words or perhaps a setback or a loss.

My new beginning with Impactus | Promise Keepers Canada dates back to 2002 when I attended my first PK Canada Conference, sitting by myself in the front row. I’ll never forget the impact it had on my life and the heart for men’s ministry that was ignited that weekend. It all started with a step of obedience to attend an event I didn’t really want to go to. Through the years, there have been many ups and downs, starts and stops, including having to look for a new job for the first time in 25 years. God saw the whole picture that weekend in 2002 . I was just introduced to this men’s ministry thing for the first time as a new believer. He saw the guy who would one day work for Impactus | Promise Keepers Canada, serving the men he was sitting with.

So, wherever you’re at right now – whether just staring your career, building a business, starting in ministry or dealing with a setback – don’t discount the days of small, humble beginnings. It may seem insignificant at the time, but as you press into Jesus and trust him, watch how he multiplies what’s in your hands. He sees who you were created to be, and he is honored and glorified when you allow him to take you there.
