Bible Passage: “For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:9 NIV)
Scripture Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Do you like to be “in the moment?”
We often do. Men like to be in the moment because we hate to miss something, to be out of the loop, or to be misinformed. We like to be in the present, not necessarily in a mindfulness sense, but recognizing that this is the moment we can impact. Now is what matters.
We can’t do anything about the past. The future hasn’t yet come. The present is where the action is, where we are actively making our mark.
Being in the moment is great. Looking to the future is also good. That is where our salvation lies.
Paul reminds the Thessalonians that they were appointed for salvation and not for wrath. This is, of course, both a present and a future perspective.
We are saved now. Our future is determined. Our path is set. Eternity is a finished discussion. We also look to the future, where those who love and follow Jesus will be saved from the wrath that is yet to come.
Here’s what Paul may be hinting at for us:
Be in the present but allow the future to motivate your actions now. Take the reality of the future, allow it to shape your view of the present, and let it guide your actions.
Because we are saved from wrath, because we no longer have to live in fear of a coming judgment or wonder whether God is for us or against us, we can celebrate our salvation and live fully in the present moment. The joy and hope of our future, secure from punishment, frees us to live well in the present.
As men face each day, knowing that we are destined for salvation rather than wrath, let us live in the moment and make the best of it.
Prayer: God, I am grateful for my salvation. Thank You that my future is not one of wrath, but one given to me through Jesus Christ. Help me to live in the present, knowing my future is secure. Amen.
Reflection: How often do you think about your future? How should your future salvation affect your daily life today?
