Theme of the Week: Stewardship
Bible Verse: “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.” Luke 16:10
Scripture Reading: Luke 16:1-31
Now that I am a dad, I find myself repeating one-liners that I used to hate hearing my own parents say.
Take for example, the sentence: “he who is faithful in little…!”.
I can still hear my dad saying that. To which, I would finish the rest of the sentence, “…yes dad, He will be faithful in much.”
This one-liner comes from the verse in Luke 16:10 that says, “one who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.”
It’s easy as a young teen, or young adult to assume that it will be easier to be generous when you have more. Or that you will be more disciplined when you have more time.
My experience as a man, and as a church leader is that it typically doesn’t work out that way. For many, the more we make, the more we are tempted to spend, and they find it equally as difficult to give.
All throughout scripture, we see men and women who were generous with what they had. Consider the young boy who had only a few loaves and fish to give but gave generously or David who was faithful in tending sheep.
These were guys who were faithful with little, and God did much with their meager resources.
Similarly, there are many verses in Scripture about dishonest living. Take Proverbs 10:2 for example; “Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death.”
God desires us to live ordinary and faithful lives, gaining whatever wealth we do, honestly and righteously.
Prayer: God, help us to be faithful with the small things as well as the big things. Forgive us if we have been dishonest, or unfaithful with the things you have given to me.
Reflection: Consider what has God given you (both big and small) and ask yourself, how can you be sure to be faithful with it? In what ways have you may be dishonest with your finances?
