Family: We All Have One Recap

In Daily Devotional by Ray Ortlund

Theme of the Week: Family: We All Have One

Bible Verse: Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1-2 ESV

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 5:1-21

God created families to display the multifaceted wisdom of God to the world. Through our relationships in our families, as broken and imperfect as we are, God still displays to everyone that his ways are far higher than our ways. God has what is best for us. As husbands, fathers and sons, we can make our part in communicating that to everyone around us. Here are some of the highlights from this week:

Husbands and Wives Growing in Wisdom Towards Each Other
Your lifetime impact on your wife should be that her life opens up more and more, and she is enabled to become all that God wants her to be.

Children Growing in Wisdom Towards Their Parents
And to “honor” our parents is to treat them as weighty and worthy, just because they are our parents. They do not have to earn our respect; we owe it to them. The burden is not on them but on us—according to the Word of God.

Parents Growing in Wisdom Towards Their Children
The word translated “train up” means “dedicate.” Dedicate your child to Christ. Do not raise your child for the American Dream. Warn your child against the American Dream. It is an easy way to Hell. Your parental role is to raise your child to be gung-ho for Christ.

All of Us Growing in Wisdom From the Lord
Whatever else God is doing in your life today, however painful it may be, if you are in Christ, God is not forsaking you, God is not dismissing you, God is not hostile toward you. He is treating you as a son, a beloved son in whom he is well pleased, for the sake of Christ his Son.
