Focus on Forward Faith

In Daily Devotional by Paul Fraser

Theme of the Week: Is the Christian Religion Hypocritical or Real?

Bible Verses: “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14 NIV

Scripture Reading: Philippians 3:13-14

You may have been raised believing the power of the Christian faith is in the religious activities. Going through the motions was most important and maybe even rewarded. As we learned this week, Jesus didn’t have issues with religious activities. In Matthew 6, he took issue with the motives and heart behind why the people did these activities. He taught the people of that day and us today that the internal motivations for all that we do are most important to God. While man looks on the outside, God looks on the inside.

I hope this week you have leaned into a new conversation with Jesus on these heart issues. Perhaps we all could do ourselves a favor and leave some old ways of living and thinking behind, so we can focus on the things Jesus wants us to focus on.

Let’s be men who lay our hearts bare before the Lord consistently, allowing him all access to speak into, change, and transform our lives. Let’s be men who fast and pray and who care deeply about the needs of others. Let’s be men who are generous with our finances and our time.

Paul the apostle, in today’s scripture verse, teaches us that it’s not just enough to leave some old things behind, but also important to press on and move our faith forward. Let’s commit to moving our faith forward. Even if it’s an incremental step, moving closer to Jesus is always the right move!
