Following Christ the Truth

In Daily Devotional by Chris Walker

Bible Passage: “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” (Hebrews 1:1-3 NIV)

Scripture Reading: John 14:6; 1 John 2:6

Some guys like to read the whole manual before putting something together.

Others like to wing it and figure it out as they go, perhaps returning to the manual if (and usually when) they make a mistake.

The written-out instructions are crucial; they tell us what to do. But of course, we then need actually to walk through those steps.

These days, it’s super-helpful to have tools like YouTube, where we can watch an expert do what our instruction manual is talking about. The lived example helps illustrate the manual’s words and shows how they work in real life.

In a way, that’s exactly what Jesus did for us.

The Bible gives us God’s will, commands, and expectations in written form.

Jesus takes all that and lives it out perfectly in real life, providing an expert example of what it means to live a life exactly as God desires.

We have already discussed the Bible as God’s measuring rod for truth this week, as well as examining the fruit of the Spirit of truth.

But Jesus also referred to Himself as “the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6).

Jesus is God incarnate, the Word incarnate, and truth incarnate, all at the same time.

Today’s passage says that God has revealed Himself to us fully in Jesus, the “exact representation” of His being (Hebrews 1:3). Jesus is everything God is, and vice versa.

In our search for truth, this means we look to the perfect example of Jesus as our best picture of what truth looks like when a human being lives it out.

Put another way:

If it doesn’t look like Jesus, it ain’t true.

Scripture says, “Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did” (1 John 2:6). If we’re going to call ourselves a Christ-follower, we actually have to follow the way of Christ.

As a general rule, when we have truth that is consistent with Scripture, the Spirit’s fruit, and also the way of Christ, we can be confident that we are finding our way into God’s truth.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your life, which shows me how to live God’s will and truth perfectly. Help me to know Your way better, and to walk in it. Amen.

Reflection: Does the life and teaching of Jesus challenge any beliefs that you hold to? Find someone you trust to talk to about it.
