Full of Grace and Truth

In Daily Devotional by Kirk Giles

Bible Verse: “…the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14 CSB

Scripture Reading: John 1:1-18

Wherever you go, people have a perception of who you are. But usually, that perception is based on their experiences with you and not the entire picture.

For example, the people you work with only see the work version of you. They don’t know what you are like with your family.

The same temptation can happen with Jesus. We are drawn to specific stories and examples that portray only one part of who Jesus is.

This happens because most of us relate to the version of Jesus that is most like us.

Some men are all about the rules. When you play a game or take a new job, you need to understand all the rules and guidelines before you will do anything. You can get annoyed by others who don’t see life this way.

If this resonates with you, you probably enjoy passages where Jesus turns over tables or returns to judge and reign. You may also get frustrated with all the people who focus on love and compassion, and likely think we need to preach more truth.

Other men focus on just going with the flow. You live with the idea that “it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.” You see rules as something that can get in the way of loving people.

Men like this tend to enjoy passages where Jesus shows compassion and kindness to others. You may also be more likely to give people space to make mistakes or time to move in the right direction, rather than calling people to repentance and change right away.

John 1 gives us a more holistic description of who Jesus is. He is full of both grace and truth!

Jesus always lives and speaks truth, and He always lives and speaks grace.

As a disciple of Jesus, your greatest desire should be to be more like Him. Are you more inclined to grace or truth? How would your life be different if you were full of both?

Prayer: God, help me see Jesus as the one full of grace and truth. Please help me understand what this means for my life and the people I interact with daily. Make me a man who is more like Jesus. Amen.

Reflection: In what ways have you seen Jesus reveal Himself as full of both grace and truth? What would it take for your life to be full of both grace and truth?
