Theme of the Week: Being Good Stewards of Creation
Bible Verse: “For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land.” Psalm 95:3-5 NIV
Scripture Reading: Psalm 95:3-5, Psalm 24:1-2, Deuteronomy 10:12
Every year, municipalities from all over Canada send homeowners tax assessments for the upcoming year detailing the projected worth of their home and then how much the home/land taxes will be. When I receive that letter each year, I want to write back to them, quoting our scripture verse today, and then ask them to send the bill to God with the note: “I am simply taking care of it for Him, please forward on to Heaven”. I wonder how that would stand up in court? In the courts of heaven, I feel like I have a strong case, but the courthouse in the city where I live wouldn’t be as gracious.
If we do believe God owns everything, even if our courts wouldn’t recognize that argument, then we must live with that perspective. Our actions are on behalf of the owner we serve, and the expectation is for us to be good stewards.
Now, as I mentioned in my introduction video for this week’s devotional topic, there seems to regularly be some debate on this topic amongst the Christian community. Some are in the camp where we never do enough for creation, while others say we give this topic too much attention. I’m not here to debate to what lengths we should or shouldn’t go but to simply state: God owns all of creation; He called it good and has left us to be good stewards of it. If that’s something we can all agree on, then we should all feel some responsibility and do something to care for His creation.
The theme for this week is Creation: God’s goodness should lead to good stewardship. In light of God’s goodness, His value for creation and His desire for you and I to enjoy it, can we step it up – even a little bit – to help care for His creation. We serve a good God, so our response should be good stewardship. There are hundreds of ways to do that, so start with small steps – They can still have a big impact!
