How to “Win” the Argument

In Daily Devotional by Dany Soto

Bible Passage: “They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.” (Luke 20:26 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Luke 20:1-47; Isaiah 11:2

Tuesday of Passion Week is filled with confrontation.

Religious leaders question Jesus relentlessly, hoping to expose some sort of weakness. Yet every response He gives reveals great wisdom, clarity, and unshakeable composure.

Many men measure strength by volume or dominance in arguments. They incorrectly equate verbosity with accuracy.

Jesus demonstrates another kind of authority: a calm truth rooted in God’s wisdom.

He listens, discerns their motives, and speaks with precision. His confidence flows from intimacy with the Father, not from the need to win approval, and not from how loud He can be.

Pressure exposes character. When challenged, do we become defensive, sarcastic, or fearful? Christ shows that spiritual maturity produces steadiness. He does not avoid hard conversations, yet He never loses control. He doesn’t need to “prove” anything; He’s on the side of truth.

So all He does is share that truth with intentionality.

This day also highlights the importance of deeply knowing Scripture. Jesus answers with truth shaped by the Word. Men who desire to lead well must cultivate disciplined thinking, allowing Scripture to shape their responses long before conflict arrives. We train in the off-season. The more a man is informed, transformed, and conformed by the Word of God, the more prepared he will be when called upon to speak.

The crowds watch closely. Integrity is revealed publicly. Jesus refuses manipulation, yet He remains compassionate. His example calls men to pursue both conviction and humility.

Steadfastness is forged through daily devotion. It grows when we submit our thoughts, words, and reactions to Christ. The world needs men who can stand firm without becoming harsh, men whose strength is anchored in truth, not in force or violence.

Real men, God-honoring men, don’t tarnish their witness just to “win.”

Prayer: Father, give me wisdom to stand firm under pressure. Let my words reflect Your truth, and may my heart remain steady in Christ. Amen.

Reflection: How do you typically react when challenged, and what would it look like to respond like Jesus?
