Leading with Peace at Home

In Daily Devotional by Andrew Yates

Bible Passage: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:15 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:12-17; Ephesians 5:1-2

It’s often easiest to be patient with strangers.

We’ll smile at the cashier, thank the waiter, or hold the door for someone we’ve never met.

Then we walk through the front door, and suddenly our patience runs thin.

The people we love the most often receive the worst version of us.

That’s not the way of Jesus.

Paul writes, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” The word rule carries the idea of an umpire making the final call. In other words, before anger speaks…before frustration takes over…before pride demands its own way…let the peace of Christ have the final say.

That changes the atmosphere of a home.

Jesus never led by intimidation. He led with sacrificial love. He was patient with His disciples when they misunderstood Him. He corrected them when necessary, but He never stopped loving them. His strength wasn’t seen in demanding His own way, it was seen in laying down His life for others.

That’s the pattern for men to follow.

If you’re married, your wife should experience the peace of Christ in the way you love, listen, and lead. If you’re a father, your children should know that your home is a place where grace is stronger than anger. If you’re single, the people closest to you should recognize that Christ is shaping the way you treat others.

No man leads perfectly.

There will be days when you lose your patience or say something you wish you could take back. When that happens, don’t let pride keep you from apologizing. Some of the strongest words a man can say are, “I was wrong. Will you forgive me?”

Homes aren’t transformed by perfect men; they’re transformed by humble men who offer their home a heart that is surrendered to the Prince of Peace.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the example of Jesus, who leads with love, patience, and grace. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed stress, pride, or frustration to affect the people closest to me. Let the peace of Christ rule in my heart so it is seen in my home, my conversations, and my relationships. Give me the humility to admit when I’m wrong and the courage to lead by serving others. Make my life a reflection of Jesus. Amen.

Reflection: Who experiences the “real you” most often? Would they describe your presence as bringing peace or tension? What is one small way you can bring the peace of Christ into your home today?
