Theme of the Week: Rest-Work Balance
Bible Verse: “I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint” Jeremiah 31:25 ESV
Scripture Reading: Matthew 11:28-30, Jeremiah 31:25
I attended a retreat one time. The organizer asked a fellow attendee, “What do you like to do to relax?” He responded: “I have no idea.” I’ve realized since then that rest doesn’t come easily to all of us.
Depending on your personality, you may have a hard time knowing how to take a Sabbath. It may be hard, even frustrating for you.
The word Sabbath literally means to cease. My basic guideline is to stop whatever my normal work is, and build a day with no obligations. If I feel like I have to do something on Sabbath, I don’t. Instead, I try to fill the day with things that refresh me, and make me feel alive, including deepening my relationship with God and others.
If you spend all week behind a desk, try something physical. Go for a walk or bike ride. If you spend most of your time doing physical work, take a nap. Experiment with what works for you. One warning: avoid pseudo-rest, activities that seem restful but don’t leave you feeling energized. I find that most activities that involve screens are pseudo-rest for me.
Have fun. Enjoy God’s gift of rest. It’s a gift, evidence that he cares for you.
