Longing for a Better Country

In Daily Devotional by Scott Roberts

Bible Passage: “But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.” (Hebrews 11:16 ESV)

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 11:13-16

As we conclude our week, we must remember one final truth that puts everything else into perspective:

This world is not our home.

Throughout Hebrews 11, we read about believers who trusted God in different situations: some had power, influence, and riches, while others faced struggle, uncertainty, and opposition.

They lived in earthly nations. They worked hard, raised families, and served God where He planted them, whether it was favorable for them or not.

Yet they understood that their ultimate hope was not found in any worldly kingdom.

The author tells us that they were “strangers and exiles on the earth” and that they desired “a better country, that is, a heavenly one.”

It is easy to become consumed with the future of our nations. We worry about elections, cultural changes, economic uncertainty, and the seemingly darkening direction society is heading.

While those concerns are valid, they can dominate our thinking.

The Bible continually lifts our eyes to something higher…something greater!

The ultimate answer is not a political party, a government program, a national movement, or even a return to better values. While Christians should certainly seek and fight for what is right, our deepest hope rests elsewhere.

Brothers, our hope is in our Lord and King, Jesus Christ.

One day, Jesus will return and fully establish His perfect Kingdom. Sin, injustice, and even death itself will be defeated. Every earthly ruler will bow before Him. Every nation will answer to Him. Every promise of God will be fulfilled.

This future hope doesn’t make us less useful in the present; it makes us more useful, because we have biblical principles to guide us and have been gifted with the eternal solution to what every human needs: the Gospel.

Because our hope is secure, we can love our neighbors without becoming cynical. We can engage our culture positively without placing our dependence on it. And we can care deeply about our government and country without believing that its success or failure determines the ultimate future.

Christian men can love their nation because they do not worship it. We pray for our nation because we know its future rests in the hands of God.

You are a citizen of Heaven, living temporarily on earth. Be a blessing where God has placed you and be an influence for good and the glory of God, never forgetting where your true home is.

A better country awaits us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the nation where You have placed me and for the opportunities You have given me to serve You here. Help me to be a faithful citizen, a godly man of integrity, and a faithful witness for Christ. Guard me from placing my ultimate hope in earthly governments or national success. Fix my eyes on the coming Kingdom of Christ and the heavenly city You have prepared for Your people. Until that day, help me to live faithfully for Your glory. Amen.

Reflection: How might your priorities, concerns, and daily decisions change if you consistently remembered that your ultimate citizenship is in Heaven and that a better country awaits you there?
