Theme of the Week: The One Who Will Never Fail

Bible Verse: I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13

Scripture Reading: Romans 15:13

Happy New Year!

I’m not sure how you celebrated last night. For many, I’m sure it’s a mixed bag of emotions with some relief, some sorrow, some excitement or some hope, as we said goodbye to 2020.

Have you heard the phrase “You never get a second chance to make a first impression”? So, how will you introduce yourself to the year 2021?

I remember when I was young, my family would head to the church for a fun time of fellowship and connection on December 31. I was always so excited because I got to stay up late! Then around 11:50 pm, we would stop all the games, the eating, and the running around the church, go to the sanctuary and literally pray in the new year. The significance was lost on me then, when I just saw this as time for a 15-minute nap to catch a second wind for more partying. It’s not lost on me now.

Today’s scripture, in Romans 15, seems fitting to start off a new year with, as it is an actual recorded prayer by Paul, the Apostle. Those words are as poignant today as they were back then.

We fill our lives with so much: busyness, stress, worry, etc. But Paul is praying that, if we find God as our source of hope, joy and peace, we will overflow with confident hope, through the power of the Spirit because of our trust in him. That’s my New Year’s resolution right there! I want to be overflowing with hope in a world that is filled with discouragement, cynicism, suspicion and fear. What a testimony that would be.

So, how will you introduce yourself to the year 2021? Could you carve out some extra time today with God? Don’t know what to pray? Maybe you could start by asking God to be your source of hope, joy and peace.
