One Tool Among Many

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Bible Passage: “But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, that is, Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.” (Ephesians 4:15-16 NASB)

Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:1-31

How often have you had to do a job, and you needed more than one tool?

I mean, almost every job we do requires more than one tool. These tools were meant to function in their own unique and precise ways, but they were insufficient to do the whole job unless they worked in tandem with other tools that also functioned in their own unique and precise ways.

So it is with the Lord Jesus’ glorious work here on earth.

He has made you uniquely, but He has also made us uniquely. We are meant to work together.

We conducted a survey at our church, and one question was, “What are the greatest strengths in how your leadership team is set up?” And the top answer was, “Everyone works together, sharing roles, supporting each other.”

Community is an incredible secret power in serving.

When we serve in community:

  • We get to see each other’s strengths and gifts in action.
  • We receive encouragement and support.
  • If we drop the ball (and we will), someone else is there to pick it up.
  • We grow together as friends.
  • We sharpen one another.
  • We build shared memories.
  • We can accomplish more.
  • We can be held accountable for doing the things that we know we should do.

Of course you can serve on your own. But man, there is so much fun, energy, and mutual encouragement when you serve in community.

Aristotle’s claim that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” is most definitely true when it comes to serving.

Part of understanding your identity in Christ is knowing that you were meant to work in partnership with others. The job is too big for one person to do on their own. God designed us to function best when we function with others!

The Shop Owner knows what He is doing. Humble yourself and listen to His desire that you work with, support, and rely on others.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You that I am Yours. Thank You for the way You made me. Thank You for the way You have made others in the Body of Christ. Grant me the grace to see how others are gifted and how we can work together to accomplish what neither of us could accomplish on our own. There is perfect unity in the Trinity. May you be in us so that we may be unified in the same way. I know this brings You glory. Amen.

Reflection: Are you a strong team player or more of a Lone Ranger? How does Jesus want to show you where you need to work better with others? Is there something standing between you and another person with whom the Lord would like you to work? Do you need to apologize? Do you need to forgive? Don’t let anything get in the way of God doing His great work in and through you!
