Bible Passage: “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:12b NIV)
Scripture Reading: Exodus 17:8-16
Discipline!
How are you doing in that area?
January 1st is consistently a time when men make decisions about how they will be different in the coming year.
Maybe they are going to work out more. Maybe they are going to spend more time with their families. Maybe they are going to spend more time with God.
Inevitably, those “resolutions” get forgotten about and dropped, usually before Valentine’s Day.
The best way that I have discovered for stability in anything in my life is through a brother partnering with me.
I love to memorize scripture and, for the first twenty or so years of my life, I practiced that discipline alone. I was able to memorize some passages of Scripture, but it was often hit-or-miss. The aspiration of my heart wasn’t becoming reality.
Then, in 1998, a friend and I decided we would start memorizing Scripture together. We would connect every week and quote the verses we were working on.
Wow! That made all the difference. It has been almost thirty years now, and I have remained consistent in that desire.
I have had different memorizing partners, but it has always been the partnership that has determined the success.
In fact, for the last twenty years, one friend and I have called each other every Wednesday morning to quote our verses to each other. We aim for only four verses a week, but because we offer each other support, we have been able to memorize thousands of verses!
I could never have accomplished this on my own. Having a brother for stability is the way to go.
With that kind of support, there is nothing that the Lord can’t do in your life.
You can manage your money better.
You can break the addiction of porn in your life.
You can get in better shape.
You can grow closer to Jesus.
Guys, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
With you, at least one brother, and the companionship and presence of the Lord Jesus Christ as the third strand, you have the potential of enormous success in your future.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for providing the support that I so desperately need. You do this through Your Spirit, but You also do this through the men that You have placed in my life. Help me to fight for my brothers, to fight alongside my brothers, so that we can become all that You want us to be. Life is hard, and we are weak on our own. But together, by Your grace, we can become an immovable wall to support our spouses, our families, our churches, and our communities. Amen.
Reflection: Who would you consider to be your strongest support? What men has God placed around you that are meant for stability? Who are you providing stability for? What does that look like in your life, or what could it look like?
