Peace and God’s Promises

In Daily Devotional by Paul Fraser

Bible Verse: “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.” 2 Peter 1:3-4

Bible Reading: Isaiah 26:3; 2 Peter 1:3-8

Why does believing God’s promises bring God’s peace?

Simply put, it’s because He is faithful and trustworthy. He does what He says He will do and will never break a promise. If you’ve ever had someone break a promise to you, you know how painful that can be. It can make you hesitant, perhaps, to believe other promise-makers. But I want you to know that God cannot break His promises. He is bound by His words, so you can trust Him fully. Who else can you do that with? Not many, if any, I bet.

Because He can’t break His word, this should give you and me a great deal of assurance and peace. I like how Isaiah, the prophet from the Old Testament, puts it: “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.” (Isaiah 26:3)

And if that weren’t enough, the promises God has for us are “precious and very great,” as Peter writes in his second letter in the New Testament (2 Peter 1:4). How amazing is that?! “Precious and great” promises from someone who will never fail— I don’t know about you, but that helps me sleep at night!

What are the promises that God has for us? It’s a great question that can’t be answered in one short devotional. So, I encourage you to continue to journey through the Word of God to see what those promises are. I believe that, as you discover them and choose to believe in them, it will give you a greater sense of peace in all areas of your life.

Reflection: Remind yourself of the promises of God that bring you peace. What are some promises of God that need more of your time to think about and explore?

Prayer: Thank You, God, for Your precious and very great promises You have given to us. Thank You for being so faithful. Help my faith to be steadfast and strong enough to stand firm on them. Let them be a firm foundation for my life.
