Theme of the Week: Rebuilding Intimacy
Bible Verse: “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalms 46:10 ESV
Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 3:16-17, John 4:21-24, Matthew 6:16-18, Philippians 4:8-9, Psalm 46:10
Today we are looking at the practicalities of building intimacy with God. It’s nice to talk theory, but there must be actionable steps to follow if this is really going to change your life.
Spiritual disciplines must be done with the intention of becoming more like God and cultivating intimacy in the most important relationship in your life. They are not meant to simply be an item on your to-do list.
Sometimes this will come naturally and enjoyably, other times you will need to discipline yourself and force engagement anyway. Intimacy is not always easy work.
I personally believe the best-rounded relationships with God are those that can jump from one discipline to the next. Being able to engage and connect on several different levels is the mark of a robust relationship. Without having all six of these disciplines active, you are missing out on the other valuable ways to experience intimacy with Jesus.
I encourage you to take stock on the list below. Evaluate how well you engage with each one and think about what it might look like to increase or implement them in your life going forward.
- The Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
- Worship (John 4:21-24)
- Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13)
- Fasting (Matthew 6:16-18)
- Meditation (Philippians 4:8-9)
- Stillness (Psalm 46:10)
Which of these disciplines would be the most useful to have more of in your life right now? Where in your daily schedule could you incorporate this discipline for 5 minutes?
If you can answer those 2 questions and make the necessary adjustments for the next 7 days, you will notice a major improvement in your connection with God.
