Respecting Authority Without Worshiping It

In Daily Devotional by Scott Roberts

Bible Passage: “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” (Romans 13:1 ESV)

Scripture Reading: Romans 13:1-7

Romans 13 is a crucial biblical passage for understanding governmental authority.

It is also one of the most misunderstood passages in Scripture.

Why?

Because Christians throughout history have wrestled with an important question:

If God tells us to submit to governing authorities…what do we do when governments act contrary to biblical truth?

Paul explains here that government is not merely a human invention; God established civil authorities as part of His design for maintaining order and justice in society.

Governments help restrain evil and provide stability, enabling people to live in peace.

This means that Christians should not be naturally rebellious people. A follower of Christ should be known for respecting lawful authority and paying his taxes. Even when he disagrees with the government, the Bible calls him to treat those in authority with appropriate respect.

What makes this passage noteworthy is that it was written under the Roman Empire. Rome was not a Christian government at all. Many Roman leaders were corrupt, immoral, and extremely hostile to Christianity.

Yet Paul still taught believers to recognize the legitimate authority God had established.

Romans 13 does not teach that governments are always right or that Christians must obey every command without question. The Bible contains examples of God’s people refusing to obey authorities when those authorities demanded disobedience to God:

  • Daniel continued to pray when it was forbidden (Daniel 6:10).
  • After being threatened to be silent about Christ, the apostles declared, “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).
  • Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow down to Nebuchadnezzar’s idol (Daniel 3:16-18).

These believers’ loyalty to earthly rulers had limits because their highest loyalty belonged to the Lord.

This helps us maintain proper balance. We neither despise government nor worship it.

We respect authority, but we do not treat political leaders as idols or saviors. We honor those who govern us, but remember that every prime minister, president, governor, premier, king, judge, and ruler will one day stand before Jesus Christ and give an account.

For the Christian man, this means living with humility and wisdom. We should avoid the temptation to place our hope in politics. We should also avoid the temptation to become cynical, angry, or rebellious.

Instead, we seek to be faithful citizens while remembering that every earthly authority is temporary and every earthly government is accountable to God; Christ alone deserves our ultimate allegiance.

Prayer: Father, thank You for establishing authority and order in the world. Help me to be a man who respects lawful authority and lives with daily integrity. Give me wisdom to know when to submit and the courage to stand firm when obedience to You requires it. Give me discernment to keep my ultimate trust fixed on Christ rather than political leaders. Remind me that Jesus is the true King over every nation and every ruler. Amen.

Reflection: Do you find it easier to place too much trust in political leaders, or to become cynical and dismissive of authority altogether? How might God’s Word bring greater balance to your thinking?
