Sacrifice

In Daily Devotional by Marc Brûlé

Theme of the Week: Strength in the Lord

Bible Verse: “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” Hebrews 13:15–16

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:1-2

Sacrifice. We associate that word with pain, loss, giving something up. What is interesting about this word and its context is that the Hebrew Christians understood the Old Testament implications. Any sacrifice offered to God had to be your best. The best of the animals, the first-fruits of the harvest, they were the sacrifices that were deemed acceptable to God. God did not accept leftovers and second best.

Loving God with all our strength involves giving Him our best.

We can all be guilty of using our best strength for other things and giving what is left over to God. That’s where we often view Sunday as the end of the week. Sunday is the first day of the week because God gets our first strength.

What does giving God your best look like? With your time? With your money? With your relationships?

Does He not deserve our best — the one who gave His life to purchase our forgiveness and give us eternal life? Is He not worthy of our best?

Prayer: God, I pray I would not give you my leftovers. Be honored with what I offer you; may it be a sacrifice pleasing to your sight.

Reflection: Let’s take inventory of where our best strength is spent. Let’s adjust our lives to honor Jesus with our best strength.
