Serving Before Suffering

In Daily Devotional by Dany Soto

Bible Passage: “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” (John 13:14-15 NIV)

Scripture Reading: John 13:1-17; Luke 22:14-27; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Thursday of Passion Week draws men into the Upper Room, where Jesus reveals a kind of strength the world rarely understands and even mocks.

Knowing the Cross is only hours away, He takes time to teach a powerful lesson.

Jesus kneels to wash the disciples’ feet. The One with all authority chooses the posture of a servant, a posture of love. When all human tendencies would be to look towards Himself in light of His current circumstance…Jesus chooses to look towards others instead.

This moment challenges common ideas about leadership and love. Many men are taught to lead from a place of control, status, or self-interest/self-advancement.

Jesus leads through humility and compassion. He does not lose authority by serving; He reveals its true meaning. Strength in God’s Kingdom is measured by love in action, not by empty platitudes.

Peter initially resists because the act feels uncomfortable. Pride often hides behind/disguises itself as resistance to receiving or offering humble service. Jesus insists that cleansing is necessary. He points toward the deeper washing being accomplished through His coming sacrifice.

Men who follow Christ must allow Him to serve them first before they can serve others well.

The meal shared that night carries profound weight. The bread broken, the cup shared, and a covenant sealed in His blood. Jesus prepares His disciples for a future shaped by sacrifice and unity, a future in which His sacrifice and His love are the very foundation of all the good we will ever experience. Even knowing betrayal is near, even sitting at that very table—Jesus continues to love faithfully.

This reveals a steady, resilient devotion that does not depend on perfect circumstances or even on seemingly beneficial ones.

Thursday calls men to examine how they use their strength and their position. Do we use it to elevate ourselves or to lift others? True masculinity in Christ reflects leadership that protects the well-being of those entrusted to us. It is modeled through sacrificial love, which serves others even if there’s no gain for us.

Before the Cross, Jesus chooses service. Before suffering, He gives love. In doing so, He shows that the greatest victories often begin in quiet acts of humility that don’t make excuses because times are hard. He taught men how to love and serve others regardless of the circumstances.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, shape my strength through Your example. Teach me to lead by serving and to love others with humility and courage. Amen.

Reflection: Where is Christ calling you to serve quietly instead of seeking recognition?
