Speaking What Strengthens

In Daily Devotional by J.R. Hudberg

Bible Passage: “You are altogether beautiful, my darling; there is no flaw in you.” (Song of Songs 4:7 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Song of Songs 4:1-15

Words are cheap.

We hear that phrase in a number of places, even from the pulpit in sermons—especially sermons about giving.

Our credit card statements and spending habits communicate what is truly important to us. True to about half.

Words do matter. A lot. Anyone who has ever received a compliment or an insult knows the true weight of words.

Words can either build confidence or destroy it. They can work quickly or slowly. We should not underestimate the disturbing and phenomenal power of our words (Proverbs 18:21).

The words we use and the tone in which we utter them can shape the people we love, for both good and bad. Our words can add to their lives, bringing them a sweet melody that brightens their day, offering them courage and support.

Or, our words can sound a discordant note, creating a cacophony that disorients and bewilders.

In Song of Songs chapter 4, we are given the words of the lover, the man who is pursuing his beloved bride.

Can you hear the adoring tones? The love that covers his words to her?

In this chapter, we see the wisdom of Proverbs expressed through the model of marriage. Proverbs reminds us time and again of the importance and significance of our words, likening them to honey or to the grave that swallows people (e.g., Proverbs 16:24).

As we communicate with those around us and especially those we love, may we use our words to affirm, strengthen, and uplift, becoming men whose utterances are deliberate and purposeful, giving life to those whose ears we reach.

Men, we may think we are thick-skinned, but not everyone is. Weigh and measure your words carefully. Offer only what builds up and does not tear down.

Prayer: Father in Heaven, I know that words matter. I know my words matter in the lives of those nearest to me. Help me to speak life and affirmation to those I love. Amen.

Reflection: How can you give specific and meaningful affirmation to someone else today? The next time you want to criticize, take a minute to offer encouragement instead.
