Strength of Two

In Daily Devotional by Robert Stermscheg

Theme of the Week: Stronger

Bible Verse: “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.” Ecclesiastes 4:9

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 24:5

“Two are better than one,” so the saying goes. How true. Two can perform the job easier and faster. And if one falls down, there is someone to help him up.

In North America, two officers work a patrol car and two pilots fly a commercial jet. In many sports, there are two coaches on the sidelines – one for defense and one for offense. The list goes on.

The New Testament cites many examples of working together. Jesus sent the disciples out in twos (Mark 6:6-13). Saul of Tarsus, later the Apostle Paul, was brash and fearless but also a leader. Silas, his companion and friend, spent much time in Paul’s shadow, yet he served God with all his heart. I visualize Paul and Silas walking together down a dusty road, eagerly planning their next public meeting.

Scripture relates how both men were beaten and cast into prison for their unwavering faith. They truly were a team, inseparable in their commitment to the gospel and each other.

Today, men are faced with all sorts of problems and temptations. The world would encourage us to stand alone, relying on individual accomplishments. Friendships with other men are viewed with skepticism. Fear of failure, or vast success can become a stumbling block. That may be well-intentioned (you’re the only one you can really count on), but it is deeply misguided.

Relationships were designed to encourage and support, rather than hinder or expose our weaknesses. By working together and leaning on those who’ve been tested, strength resonates in all. Therein lies true strength – in the companionship and wisdom of godly men.

“A wise man is strong, yes, a man of knowledge increases strength.” Proverbs 24:5 NKJV

Prayer: God, You have created us for community. Help me to find community that is healthy and growing and help me to be community to others around me.

Reflection: Find a friend and tell them how much you value their friendship.
