Tethered Souls

In Daily Devotional by Dean Brenton

Bible Passage: “Love the Lord your God with…all your soul…” (Mark 12:30 NIV).

Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 4:29-31, Psalm 42:1-2; Psalm 62:1-2; 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

We can’t go far these days without checking if our devices are charged enough to get us through the next trip, meeting, or call.

And who among us hasn’t faced the frustration of the flashing “low battery” signal? It almost always happens that when we need power the most, it’s at its least.

Men, our spiritual lives are often just like that.

We can be so driven and drained that we rarely take time to recharge and restore our souls. If you’re not consistently recharging in God’s presence, you’ll run dry—no matter how outwardly put-together you appear.

Your soul is the eternal part of you that longs for God. King David wrote, “As the deer pants for water, so my soul pants for you, my God” (Psalm 42:1-2). Many men try to satisfy that longing with achievements, relationships, or pleasures—but only God satisfies. David understood the importance of recharging his soul and finding his rest, strength, and salvation in God alone.

Jesus also lived with His soul connected to His Father’s heart. He withdrew to pray, rested in His identity as a beloved Son, and lived with eternal purpose. That same connection is what we need so God can shape our souls into Christ’s image.

The world can drain your soul if you let it. Busyness, distraction, and sin all deplete our souls’ energy. Soul formation requires regular, deliberate connection with God for rest and renewal.

While all batteries have a lifespan, new technology has allowed batteries to be optimized for “smart charging” and longer life. Our eternal souls don’t have to be continually drained. If we spiritually smart-charge through communion with God, we too can be renewed every day (2 Corinthians 4:16).

Prayer: Lord, my soul longs for You. Restore me, refresh me, and tether me to Your love and my identity as a beloved son. Amen.

Reflection: Has your soul been at rest lately, or have you felt driven and drained? Recharge your batteries by spending 15 minutes in silence before God, meditating on Psalm 62:1-2, and allowing Him to refresh your soul.
