Bible Passage: “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 HCSB)
Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 3:10-17
I’m a sucker for articles that cut through the noise and highlight the actions that work. If there’s a proven way to exercise effectively in 10 minutes or become a better husband through three strategic habits, I’m all in if the advice is sound.
When it comes to building godly character, research confirms what many of us suspect: a few practices matter more than others.
The most powerful?
Regular Bible intake.
A Lifeway study found that consistent engagement with Scripture is the number one behaviour correlated with spiritual maturity.[1]
But here’s where it gets specific: a second study revealed a dramatic threshold effect.
Christians who read or listen to the Bible at least four days a week experience significantly deeper growth than those who engage less frequently. At one, two, or even three days a week, spiritual growth remains minimal.
But at four days, more days than not, there’s an extraordinary statistical jump. Cross that threshold, and your likelihood of mature Christian behaviour increases substantially.[2]
This data confirms what I’ve witnessed firsthand. The men I know who are genuinely growing spiritually are those who consistently open their Bibles.
You don’t even have to understand everything you read. You simply need to be a man who shows up.
Find an app or plan that fits your rhythm and commit to moving through Scripture at whatever pace works for you. Don’t expect constant excitement. Some days will feel dry or difficult. But this simple discipline remains one of the most effective things you can do to cultivate godly character.
Prayer: Lord, help me to delight in Your Word and feed on it regularly. Amen.
Reflection: What is one practical step you can take to regularly read or listen to the Bible?
