I love Christmas morning.
I love to watch my wife as she watches our children open the gifts she’s stuffed into their stockings. She is an amazing gift giver—as she interacts with people, she notices and remembers, then finds and gives things perfectly tailored to them: a paper mailbox for one, a kid’s DJ kit for the second, and pink hot chocolate for the third.
Who is the best gift-giver that you know?
After teaching His disciples to pray, Jesus famously says, “So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” (Matthew 7:11 NIV).
In Luke’s Gospel, He says, “How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him” (Luke 11:13 NIV).
This week, we’ll dive into the ever-popular and divisive topic of spiritual gifts. Some men know the joy of discovering and deploying their gifts in service to God. Some have been burned by those who’ve been “gifted.”
(I’ll never forget the advice of a seasoned pastor who told me, “We hire for gifting, and fire for lack of character.”)
Some men have been through church splits over the “sign-gifts,” and others of you are just curious about or longing to see the “sign-gifts” deployed to the glory of God. Who wouldn’t want to see a miraculous healing in their next Sunday service? Every man knows someone who needs healing!
We’ll get to some of these questions and topics, but we need to begin with a simple truth:
God is the best gift-giver there is. If we know anything of God and His character, we will be as eager for any gift He wants to give as my kids are eager to open the stocking their mother prepares for them each Christmas morning.
If we’re not eager for any gift that God wants to give, we simply don’t know God well enough yet.
Men, God is the best gift-giver there is. What if we become like boys at Christmas, eager to open up everything our Father wants to give us?
Prayer: Lord, the truth is that I often don’t trust You enough. If You give me the gift of generosity, I’ll have to live with less. If You give me the gift of evangelism, I’ll have to face my fears and share Christ. If You give me the gift of miracles, my church won’t know what to do with me. Yet, I know that You are good, that You are wise, that You are Jesus…so give the gifts You have. Create a deeper trust and surrender in me, eager for whatever You deem best. Don’t stop giving, Lord! Amen.
Reflection: Are you truly open to any gifts that God wants to give you and your church? Consider what baggage, doubts, questions, and excitement you bring to this topic. Lay it all before God today.
