Bible Passage: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Matthew 5:1-10
Have you ever been to a funeral and sat there asking God why He allowed this to happen?
I have.
It’s hard to have a lot of questions and no answers. It’s hard when the emotions and the reality don’t match up. It’s hard when you want the world to stop because yours is spinning out of control.
But one thing I’ve learned over the years is that grief that is not dealt with is like heavy chains on one’s soul.
The loss of a loved one is a life-changing pain. Your life felt normal one day, then the next, it feels like your heart is a pile of rubble, and you are faced with finding a new normal without that person.
It feels like an impossible situation.
And yet, Jesus says, “Blessed are those who mourn…”
What??
Blessed???
Yes, because here is the truth that will set you free:
You will be comforted.
Let’s look at what is not written in this verse.
First, Jesus doesn’t say what you need to mourn about. We tend to think it’s about the death of someone close to us. And yes, that is true. But there are other things to mourn: the loss of friends, a good job, usable access to your full body, health, or other things—all of which take their toll on a man when we lose them.
Second, Jesus doesn’t say how long the mourning journey should be. Grief can be a lifelong road. The question is, are you moving forward on it, or are you stuck? Comfort comes when we journey. Pain consumes us when we are stuck.
If you are stuck on the road called Grief, I encourage you to find a way to open up and find healing. It might start with a conversation with someone you trust, or with letting those tears out. Whatever it is, walk the road with Jesus, and find His comfort in your mourning.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for Your comfort in my pain. Help me to know it and You more through my tears. Amen.
Reflection: What is one sadness that you are grieving right now? Bring it to Jesus and know His comfort.
